The Houston Astros are the first Major League Baseball (MLB) team to install Amazon’s checkout-free technology at their ballpark, allowing fans to purchase food and drink as quickly and seamlessly as possible.
Two retail outlets at Minute Maid Park have been equipped with ‘Just Walk Out’ capabilities, offering a selection of refreshments and souvenirs.
Fans simply enter their credit card at the store entrance, take what they want and walk out. The technology uses camera and shelf sensors to detect what a person is taking and then bills their account. The process can be made even quicker when using the Amazon One palm recognition service.
The only barrier that cannot be eliminated just yet is the need for a member of staff to check ID if someone is buying alcohol.
The Astros hope that the technology will improve the fan experience and drive additional sales.
“The Astros are proud to collaborate with Amazon to bring their Just Walk Out shopping experience to Minute Maid Park in 2022,” said Marcel Braithwaite, senior vice president of business operations for the Astros. “We wanted to provide this state-of-the-art technology to our fans, giving them a more streamlined and convenient shopping experience so they can spend more time enjoying baseball.”
Just Walk Out has been deployed at other venues in the US, including at National Hockey League (NHL) team Seattle Kraken’s Climate Pledge Arena and at TD Garden, home of the NHL’s Boston Bruins and the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Boston Celtics.
